What is teaching all about to me?
In the classroom, the best teachers begin each unit with their students by setting a learning goal. Similarly, teachers must begin each day with a goal in mind for themselves. I recently decided to articulate my own goals as a teacher. Geoffrey Canada’s question epitomizes my career goal as an educator. “If all [we are] doing [is] picking some kids to save and letting the rest fail, what [is] the point?”* Essentially, my goal in teaching is to make a positive influence in the life of each student who enters my classroom. There is no room for excuses. Whether they are vast, fast-paced gains or small, incremental improvements, I will help my students progress and succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. Undoubtedly, there will be challenges. But as Canada pointed out, is that a reason to let any child fail? I do not believe so.
In looking through this e-portfolio, you will find various ways I work to facilitate the learning of all students. My lesson plans include outlets of differentiation for individual student readiness and interests. My credentials display my ability to master any curriculum so I can help my students master it as well. Evaluations from experienced teachers who observed me show my willingness and capability to both challenge high-achieving students and reach struggling students. Therefore, as you peruse this website, you will be consistently reminded of both my intent and readiness to help every student I teach.
